Real life experiences

Yesterday I went to the doctor's office with my wife, waiting while she saw the doctor for some back problems. I went in case she got a pain shot and she needed a driver.  No shots, just needed 2 prescriptions filled, so it's off to Giant Eagle.

Giant Eagle is probably the most handicap accessible retail establishments in Wadsworth. We get prescriptions filled because of their reduced prices on generics and some diabetic meds being free.  Anyways we got there and Kathy had to go back to the pharmacy while I grabbed motorized cart and picked up a few items for supper. I got what we needed from the grocery dept and then went to the pharmacy. The scripts from the doctor hadn't been received as yet, so as Kathy was waiting for those, I went to the check out. As usual, I used the self check out. The cashier overlooking the self checkout area, bagged my groceries, put them in my cart and offered to help me to my car. I figured that since it was only 2 bags, not heavy, and I was in a close parking space, I would decline the offer. The one thing I do regret was getting this young man's name as I called the store later and told the manager how much I appreciated the offer for help.

In contrast, I was at the Walmart the night before on my way home from work. My purchase involved 2 8 packs of Coke Zero, a gallon of milk, and 2 other bags of groceries. I went to a full service checkout where there were 3 cashiers standing around talking. I paid for my purchase and there was no offer to help me get to my car. I was allowed to take the cart to my car  to get my groceries there. When I returned my cart, the people greeter told me to park it in a space that I would have had a problem walking away from if I hadn't had crutches.

So to the anonymous commenter  2 posts down, I will be fair when it's called for. But if I had been injured getting out of the cart, whose fault would have it been?

Not good to be angry so much. Your anger at Walmart is not healthy. People need to work and your crusade against them is not healthy.

Oh, good grief. The last 4 times I was at Wal-mart their idiot self-scanners malfunctioned...and these are the brand new ones they just installed. Twice, they gave back incorrect change [not enough]. The front end manager that came over said she wished she had a sledge hammer cause they were junk and caused nothing but problems. Once, I had to wait 15 minutes for someone to come fix it, while a cashier one lane over just kept staring at the red blinking light indicating a malfunction. I finally had to TELL her to call someone to fix it and the annoyed look on her face told me all I needed to know. Took me 3 minutes to get what I needed and 15 minutes to check out. The only reason I shop there is because their prices are a little lower than elsewhere and being out of work, I have to watch every penny. Most of the workers there have crappy attitudes and customer service skills are sorely lacking. They should have spent a few of the dollars they used while remodeling to teach their employees how to treat the PEOPLE THAT PAY THEIR WAGES!

At this point YEKIMI and have just called it as we saw it. His point was the lack of service he should have received and the fact that the self checkout should have been working properly to get him out of the store promptly.

The point I was making in this post was that the people at Giant Eagle were working harder to earn my money.

Some of the service, or lack thereof, I see at Walmart, I believe would make Sam Walton turn over in his grave.

I get excellent service at Walmart. Look just because they are non union does not mean that union folks like yourself have to be angry at them. Many people like Walmart. It is people like yourself that feel the need to tell everyone where to shop.

Never been in a union. Don't care if someone is or isn't in a union. Walmart is in what's called a SERVICE industry. What I EXPECT when I go there is to be treated with respect and to get in and out of that store as fast as possible. I can count on ONE hand and not use all my fingers how often I have been treated with respect at Walmart. I asked one employee where an item was located and he said "It's over there" and just nodded his head in one direction. I asked "Where is 'over there' and what aisle?" He got annoyed and said "It's the other side of the store and I don't know what aisle" Here's a clue, how about using those ever present radios you have clipped to your belt and ASK someone else what aisle it is in. Oh and I'm usually a pretty easy going guy, just seems I get angry after I shop at Walmart. Wixy is right, Sam Walton would be spinning so fast in his grave at what has happened to his business that he'd probably be setting off seismographs all over the country.

Your comment screams ignorance. You don't know either myself of YEKIMI.

I could care less about the UFCW and I am not a union member. I don't base my shopping on that either.

Once again Giant Eagle earned my business by their willingness to help me among other things.

I believe that Walmart is one of the reasons that the economy has degraded. Most of their products are made in China where basically there are no labor laws. It is all about cheap labor and more profits. Many stores went out of business because of the Walmart conglomerate. And manufacturing in the US has not been the same. Sorry but I don't go there and boycott it.

Boycott Walmart as if they care if you shop there. There are plenty of people that do go there.

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The game was
