This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school.
Sometimes We Need to Realize That
Sports are Just Games
Friday nights
in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students
and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school,
it is a time of year I always look forward to.
This past
Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local
high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of
the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that
they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was
rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were
able to field a team and the game was played.
The game was
played and at stake was a rotating trophy. This trophy had been in possession
of the opposing team for the past 10 years. Our team has been showing steady
improvement and were the heavy favorites on Friday.
It was a
very physical game, and the referees were making sure that emotions were not
going to get the best of the student athletes. They were very liberal in the
use of the penalty flag, but only once was the penalty unsportsmanlike conduct.
Our team won and brought the trophy home. The community is witnessing that the
future is bright.
Thanks to social
media, news travels fast. We all soon learned that another school, one that we
have participated in athletic events with, had a tragedy on the field.
This school
was celebrating their homecoming. As the homecoming court was being introduced,
one of the senior attendants collapsed on the field. She was rushed to a
hospital and both teams were notified at halftime that she had passed away. The
game was suspended, and the homecoming dance was understandably canceled.
I do know
that tomorrow is guaranteed to no one, but inside me, I say that that is not
supposed to happen to a teenager. Friday night is supposed to be a night of
good memories.
I cannot
imagine the thoughts and feelings of the families or any of the people that
attended the game. One thing I do know is that football is just a game.
It is only just a game
Tomorrow we will wake up the same
No matter the score
We won’t get any more
Life’s more important than momentary fame
