I'm getting weary of this

Now I was going to post a video blogcast of this, but time got away from me today. I hope everybody had a very relaxing Independence Day, and those overseas just had a great Sunday.

What I'm getting weary of is all this news about Lebron James. Living in northeast Ohio, we get this on all of our news outlets. Being a Cleveland sports fan, I'm expecting the worst, that being that Lebron signs with another team. If and/or when that happens, will my world change? In a word, no.

At this stage of my life, sports plays a much smaller role than in the past. Might be different if my brother, Ricky, was still alive. For those unaware, Ricky was my younger brother. He was developmentally disabled, was confined to a wheel chair for the last 20 years of his life and spent the last 8 in nursing homes. He passed away in March, 2008. Ricky was a sports fanatic and discussed it with anyone who cared to converse with him. If he were still around, he would be burning the phone line between the nursing home and my house discussing LBJ.

In the past few years, especially since the Indians tore down the team again, my interest in local professional sports has waned. Only pro sport to hold my attention these days is NASCAR and yes, it's very much a team sport.

But back to the Lebron circus. I have seen photos of fans holding up signs outside of his office in Cleveland. The signs say things like "home" and "commitment". I would love to hold a sign that says "idolatry" and "get a life" though I don't think it would go over too well.

What happens is going to happen and the sun will rise the next day. You can ask Margaret about that. She lives in suburban Baltimore. Their pro football team, the Colts, packed up and left town one night. They were without pro football for several years. Life went on, then they stole a team from another city. Life went on in that city too. There's a rumor that they got a pro football team now, but it's somewhat unsubstantiated.

Sports isn't life, just a diversion.

Amen, Cliff!
While I want Lebron to stay, I am just as prepared for him to leave..Been a Cavs fan from the start in 1970, and will continue to be Lebron or not..I try to root for the City name, not so much an individual..

The name on the front of the uniform is a heck of a lot more important than the name on the back---- Coach Herb Brooks from 1980 US Olympic team.

I've never been a big sports fan. I do remember this town during the time the Colts snuck out in the dead of night in a Mayflower van. I can remember the radio hosts that I listened to on my way to work, and how devastated they and the callers were. And I remember LOTS of "Irsay Sucks" bumper stickers!
And speaking of unsubstantiated rumors, I hear we have a baseball team.

Uh, Margaret, have you checked the standings? the same could be said about the alleged Cleveland Indians.

And poor Art Modell could never show his face in these parts again.

First, I am with you - tired of the whole King James thing (I thought that was the version of the Bible with all the thees and thous left intact). Second, Margaret, heck - she has the Ravens. I lived thru losing the Colts, then moved to the Cleveland area, and we know what happened here back in the day (think "Art Modell"). So, like you, I am a bot soured on this whole "sports loyalty" thing. Sort of enjoyed the World Cup lately, but you have to be able to enjoy 90 minutes leading up to a 1-0 score....

Sports certainly can be an aversion....perhaps a mindless one???
Hope all is well with you and your family. Suz

Too bad they don't pay ALL these prima-donnas like they used to pay members of the Canton Invaders soccer team years ago. They were so poorly paid that they all had side jobs to supplement their income as "professional" soccer players. One of the players told me he made more in tips one year than he made from playing for his soccer team.

And if I remember correctly, the Invaders won several AISL championships.

Yes, they did!

Now those were fun times..Just all came apart suddenly after Paxos sold the team..I think the successor to the Invaders, The Montreal Impact is still around in one league or another..

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The game was
