Dim Bulb Special

As I said this past Friday, the Kmart where my daughter works is closing. They had their first round of markdowns, as of Sunday. Anybody who knows anything about retail knows that the original markdowns don't even bring the items down to sale price yet. But the merchandise is flying out the door.

I was there looking around yesterday at some items, mainly dreaming. We were over at the Evil Big Box Store(tm) across the street on Monday. The item I was most interested in was still more expensive at Kmart even with the 10% discount.

Our daughter called us last night to tell us that this man was in the store on Saturday wanting to buy some coffee, which was on sale for $5.99. He decided to come in on Sunday when the going out of business sale began. The coffee then reverted to it's regular price of $6.99, minus the 10% discount of 70 cents. You do the math.

Funny thing is this is happening all over that store. I think this round of cuts is designed to give the employees a good laugh.

I feel this same way about outlet malls. Never a good idea.

Too funny!! Not much of a "sale!" Esp. since the man was in the store the day before and it was cheaper NOT on sale than on sale the next day! Oh well...

Here's a tip I learned- Many retail stores hire outside companies to run the going-out-of-business sales. They are almost never fair, and deals are scarce. One good way to tell if it's one of these companies is if the sale signs are yellow and black.

Let me tell u what, that is not even the beginning of the stupid people. And the coffee wasn't on sale for 5.99 last week it was on sale for 5.49. I could keep you here all night with stories. Our sale prices beet Wal-Mart’s and targets most times. 10% off is nothing. And most people can't even figure 10% off. I have to do it for 'em. Then they are amazed I can do it in my head. Like I am magic or something. *roll eyes* When people in retail find out I am a teacher I get lectures about how America is dumbing down our youth. Right now I wouldn't call the youth Dumb. ha-ha. You can only imagine the break room conversation. We laugh a lot in there.

The kids got some pretty good deals yesterday though. My son's future In-Laws darn near bought out the store!!

We still have a K Mart and I hope it can hold on against that evil big box. But with moves like that super going out of business "markdown", maybe they deserve what they get.

I see this all the time at the "going out of business" and "everything must go" type sales. The liquidators come in, raise all the prices, just so they can slap their big, neon colored, obnoxious clearance signs on them. Every now and then you can get a good deal but almost always I've found you pay more than the "regular price". Frustrating ....

I used to buy a lot of baby and kids clothes at the old Kmart years and years ago... but so much has changed. It seems Wal Mart has taken over the world.

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

 This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible.
