Rainy Fridays in the Fall...

A rainy Friday in October is a real bummer for me. It stinks worse when it's the night of the homecoming game. There probably won't be much marching tonight, but the game will be against rival Chippewa, so maybe the Rittman Fighting Indians will be able to turn it up a notch.

Going through Wadsworth this afternoon, I noticed that I need to fuel up the WIXYmobile. I also decided to get Kathy a peanut buster parfait from the Dairy Queen inside the store. And of course, I stopped at the BellStores Marathon station on High Street. The world's greatest convenience store manager(tm), aka Beth, runs the store. We had a conversation, like we usually do, talking about life in the seventies, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Also about school days. Although most of our conversations in school occurred during the seventh and eighth grades, I had a respect for her all during our school years. She was one who had followed the golden rule, not the one that stated "those that had the gold rules, but the one that paraphrased said, treat others the same way you want to be treated.

While I was there, I was paying for a couple of Powerades, and told the cashier have a great day and thank you for working BellStores. Beth asked me if I wanted a part time job. That's not the first time a retail manager offered me a job after I said that. What I would love to do is be a customer service coach, as I feel that excellent customer service is fast becoming a lost art. I had sent an email to the corporate office of Bellstores, telling them how much I enjoy shopping there. This is mainly for the way they treat me when I come in there, no matter when it is I come there. And this has been ongoing for years. Part of that was to get some kudos in for Beth, but there has been good people working at that location for years. A former BellStores employee is Brenda of Snicker*Snicker*Snort fame.

I hope the rain did not put a damper on the festivities tonight.
When you get that position as customer service coach, can you come down here and give some pointers too? So many people have not a clue. To me, it is just common sense. I suppose that course is not available in school these days. (or at home?)

Wixy - if you do become a customer service coach - I have several places I could send you to that need help! I was just telling the hubby the other day how disappointed I was with our Vet and also the service we received at a restaurant the other day. Hopefully good customer service is not a dying art.

I think some customers need coaching in good customer manners too. I have seen people snapping their fingers at servers in restaurants and complaining about such minute little things. The people that work at restaurants are there to help you and to serve they are not your slaves. Respect is a two way street.

Bob: Having been on both sides of the equation, I agree with your statement. When I worked retail, I used to assure those who were working with me that an irate customer was yelling at the top name on their badge(name of store) and not the bottom(theirs).

And going into Christmas season, irate customers will be out in full force getting ready to blame the associate for having enough of an advertised item on the last day of the sale.

That was a fun job....I was working there when they put in the Dairy Queen, it wasn't a BellStore at the time though. Glad they still have some good people working there!! And very glad they take care of my friend!!

Thanks Brenda. Too bad I didn't know you when you worked there, but then we worked at the same place for a very short time and didn't know each other.

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. 30 Years Ago Today........

Kathy and I said "I do." Through better and worse, rich and poor, in sickness and in health, we have been together. I love her as much now as I did March 10, 1979. What follows is a classic post from a year ago. As my long time readers know, my brother Richard passed away last year on March 4. He had spent the last 20 years of his life in a wheelchair and the last 8 living in nursing homes. Kathy had become Ricky's guardian angel after my dad passed away and my mother's health had started deteriorating. On April 4, 2004, Kathy went to the nursing home where Ricky had resided at 5:30am to tell him that our mother had passed away.
