Bananas and Sleep Apnea

First thing I want to do is welcome all the good folks from Australia who are checking me out as a result of Google searches. I recently wrote a post on sleep apnea, discussing my history with it and my new CPAP machine.

Because of this and the name of my blog, this is the top site google lists when somebody types "bananas sleep apnea" into the search line on Google. All of the sites I have seen, that were not the usual sites that come here, ended in "dot au" which I know as Australia. Normally the only hit from down under is by my good friend David McMahon.

The reason for the search is that a research team in Australia has found. as a result of a study, that drinking a banana smoothie may assist in easing conditions that cause sleep apnea. Phospholipids, or fatty acids, in bananas stay active in the mouth for six hours and may keep the throat open, therefore reducing the risk of choking.

Further studies will expand to those, like myself, who need a breathing machine(a CPAP in my case) and see if the air pressure could be reduced as a result of these phospholipids.

Interesting article. So what about just having a banana at dinner? Or does it have to be a smoothie?

I don't know. I would imagine that a banana at bedtime would be the same. The study states that the fatty acids stay active in the mouth for six hours, so that would tell me that it would be most beneficial right before you go to bed.

Bananas have a lot of medicinal purposes don't they! We always have Kenz eat one before her tennis matches to help reduce cramping. I try to eat one every day just for the potassium. Who'd have ever thought you going bananas could be so beneficial. lol

I recently did a post on the hummingbird migration map website. I'm getting 50 hits a day from people searching for the map. I was almost tempted to delete that post because I felt sorry for everyone looking in the wrong place. But at least I had a link to the real map and most people are finding it that way.

Wow. That is very interesting, Cliff. My brother-in-law has to sleep with a machine. I'll copy this and pass it on to him.

Thanks for letting me know!

Bananas are fabulous for lots of reason. They actually have more PROTEIN than any other fruit. And all kinds of other good stuff ("good stuff" not being scientific, I know). I always keep a bunch of bananas on the counter... my kids eat them like they are little monkeys, and I encourage it! WAY better than chips!
One of nature's perfect foods if you ask me... comes with it's own little "carrying case" and everything. :)

I can't believe that something as simple as a banana could help me with my sleep apnea. I am definitely going to give it a try. My CPAP machine has already started helping, but it is still worth a shot!

I recently found many useful information in your website especially this blog page. Among the lots of comments on your articles. Thanks for sharing. Go to the website
When it comes to sleep apnea, there are multiple things that are thought to be the cause. Sometimes, the cause is due to weight gain or obesity, while sometimes it's simply due to old age or family history. But no matter what the cause is, sleep apnea is treatable! By using products geared towards this condition, you can use your products to stop your breathing for short periods during the day. This will ensure the best chance of your weight loss, or getting a good night's rest! Medicine can also be prescribed to help treat sleep apnea, but it is preferable to use non-medicinal treatments first!

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The game was
