Trick or Treat Rittman Style

We had trick or treat earlier this evening in Rittman. The WIXYcam was around to record some of the action. As you can see, Rittman's finest were cruising the neighborhood to ensure safety for all the children. The weather was great, and the extension of Daylight Savings Time added to the fun, at least for the parents. Check out all the costumes and some of the homes here.

High School all Over Again

Well, I have this new blogging friend. Her name is Bella . And she tagged me. I've been tagged before, but this time I'm going to play. Rules of the game are: A)Link to the personwho tagged you(I've already done that) and post the rules on your blog(I'm doing that now.) B)Share 7 random or weird facts about yourself(funny, I've never thought of myself as random.) C)Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs(you mean I have to discriminate?) D)Let each person know that they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog(I gotta tell them???) 1)I am a kid when it comes to celebrating my birthday. But then again, anyone who looked at this blog yesterday knows that. 2)I am the same person when I'm blogging that I am if you met me in real life. 3)I am very insecure. I'll leave out the part about being fat and not very good looking. 4)I love watching MASH. I have the complete set on DVD but still will watch it if I have th...

It's My Birthday

52 years ago today I first came into the world. And I'm still going strong. Anything special planned today? Nope. I'll go to work during the day and take my grandchildren trick or treating this evening at the nursing home where my brother lives. Those also born on this date include 2nd US president John Adams(1735), strongman Charles Atlas(1893)Jefferson Airplane/Starship lead singer Grace Slick(1939), The Fonz-Henry Winkler(1945) and Actor Harry Hamlin(1951). Have a great day everyone!

From the Pressbox-Senior Night

This is the f inal edition of From the Pressbox for 2007. Senior N ight at Rittman Stadium: This was a night where the Rittman seniors in fall sports, cheerleaders and marching band members received deserved recognition for their years of participation. Kickoff: The rain comes down, and the umbrellas go up. As the Rittman-Smithville matchup begins, the heavens opened. That was the first time this season the Rittman band had to wear their raincoats. Not bad for this year. Rittman has had their struggles this season. Smithville, as well is in a rebuilding season and has had a losing season, which is not common for them. I remarked to their band announcer ,as I was looking at the half full visitors bleachers, that Smithville, like everybody else, loves a winner. Final Halftime: Smithville band performed in their raincoats this evening. The band wasn't as large as I remember past years "Marching Green Machine" groups. After a fine performance by the visitors, it's time f...

To Err is Human.....

And I was too human this evening. In the 8 seasons that I've been the Rittman band announcer, I have only committed three monumental goof ups during a show. Tonight was the third time. It was also the only time I couldn't laugh it off. Because I was going by the prompts on the script and not by my gut reaction, I missed an introduction that would have recognized the seniors in the band. Now during the marching season, the script never mentions the staff involved with the band. I don't write the script, but most of the time my name is the only adult name in the script and that is during our annual band show. When the students are involved, I feel that their hard work should be recognized. If their names are in the script and I don't know how to pronounce it, I will get the correct pronunciation. I was told that mistakes happen. Ed Sims told me tonight that I have to come back next year and do it right. Most of the students I talked to said it was no big deal. To me it is...

Funky Followup

A few weeks ago I blogged about the Funky Winkerbean comic strip and the passing away of Lisa Moore. After a couple of weeks of tying up some loose ends and the watching of Les in his grieving process, Tom Batiuk has made his "time frog" of 10 years. Checking the Funky website, which is now updated , I notice two characters are now missing-Wally and Wally Jr. Batiuk has posted on his blog that we should just sit back and watch the story unfold. Check out the site . Check out the strip

Wednesday Madness

I wanted the band show post to remain on top for a couple of days, so I thought I would take a short break from blogging. Here are some short notes that I'm pecking out as I take my morning break at work. First, as the marching band season draws to a close this week, I need to recognize the WGBB , or World's Greatest Band Boosters , my name for the Rittman Band Boosters. Once again this year they have done a stellar job in supporting the band. They have also done a good job at feeding my ego(and I eat it up). One of these fine folks has become one of my best supporters. Brenda will step aside, as her son graduates at the end of the school year. It's been a real pleasure working with her and I am looking forward to our continued friendship. Brenda has also been a contributor to this blog, sending me photos from band concerts and from the Florida trip last spring. On the band show post, Brenda is in the top picture, to the right of her good friend and longtime band boost...

From the Pressbox-2007 Rittman Indians Band Revue

It was a beautiful, quiet Saturday evening in Rittman on October 20, 2007. But the quiet was about to end as over 800 student musicians from 11 schools converged on Rittman Stadium for the 17 Rittman Indian Band Revue. The stadium was decorated by the students of the Rittman Marching Band. Two concession stands were being prepared by the Worlds Greatest Band Boosters. The chaperons were in place(see picture) and the ticket booths were ready for an audience who wouldn't leave disappointed. The show was a three parter this evening. The first part I will call.... Those who can teach. T hose who can't ... First band on the program was the Western Reserve Rider Band . Their announcer for the evening was Edison band director, Denise Reilly. The show given was Western Reserve was a presentation of Gershwin tunes. This was Western Reserve's first visit to Rittman. Second band on the agenda, also making the first trip to our show was from Akron. The Kenmore High School...
