Time for a repost

I am reposting my Mother's Day post from last year, as I see it fit to insert it here, after my last post. I really looked up to my mom and still do as she had many challenges in her life, but never gave up. This post was originally written on May 13, 2007.

For the fourth year running, I have been unable to wish my mom a happy Mother's Day, as she passed away in April, 2004. But I did take the mother of my children out for dinner last night and made dinner today-ham, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, and biscuits.

As some are aware, I do like to watch NASCAR. One thing I've admired about NASCAR is that they have not raced on Mother's Day, but today is different as it rained last night and postponed it until today. Today, the command to start was given by 21 of the driver's mothers.

Memories of my own mother: To your left is a picture of me with my mother on my wedding day in 1979. I've made the comment before that my mom was my biggest fan. She gave me a lot of support for all my endeavors. My mom didn't have the easiest of lives either. Her parents were both alcoholics, and I probably wouldn't be too far wrong by saying that my grandfather was the town drunk. She didn't have too good a reputation in her early twenties, and her first husband beat her. Heredity hasn't been too fair either as our family has been affected by a condition known as Neurofibromatosis. My younger brother and sister both had epileptic seizures as a result of it. She took care of my brother until 1999 when they finally put him in a nursing home. The seizures also took an effect on my sister's mental state, and we now take care of her.

To my mom her most important job was to be our mom, and that kept her going after my dad passed away. She knew my interests and and tried to find things to give me pertaining to them. In fact the day she died we had plans to watch the race together. Mom wanted to make sure someone would be there to take care of my sister and brother, and when she realized they would be taken care of, Mom was at peace.

Update:As I was listening to the game where the Tribe snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, I remembered when Nick Mileti was the "owner" of the Indians. On Mother's Day one year, he honored moms in attendance by giving them all Right Guard deodorant. That really stunk.

miletti didn't realize that men use right guard and the ladies like to use secret. either way, still stunk.
btw cliff, your post about your mom makes me appreciate my own mom who had her own challenges to deal with, but truly lived out her faith in CHRIST.

A beautiful Mother's day tribute to your mom.

Looking at the wedding photo... How did such a petite lady have such a bear of a son? :-)

Pat: By today's standards, my mom could be the worst mother in the world and everybody would justify it.

Every job she worked she was considered one of the best there. She would make sure we all had what we needed. And if I wasn't home at a certain time she would be up to make sure I was safe.

My good memories about my mother far outweigh the not so good. I wish she was still here, but I'm glad that she and Ricky are now together and neither one is suffering.

that was so beautiful. that is neat about Nascar not having a race on mother's day just goes to show what family means to them.

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The game was
