One day....Then a week off!

I decided that instead of just taking a four day weekend next week, I would just take a week of vacation. what have I got planned? Very little, but a lot of sleeping. I'll take the week as it comes.

The area where I live is expecting quite a bit of lake effect snow thanks to an Alberta Clipper coming through. Where I live is expecting about 1-2 inches of snow. I live over 50 miles away from Lake Erie, so we don't get the full lake effect. But here's the way I describe my way into work: I travel through parts of 4 counties, 4 area codes, and countless changes in weather patterns. I know there are many concerned since it's nearly impossible to get on the Weather Channel website at this time.

I'll have to remember to get an emergency kit in the WIXYmobile, which is something anyone in the northern states needs to have. A blanket, change of clothes, extra medication, if you have prescriptions, drinking water, food and maybe a couple of those self heating coffee drinks. Make sure you fully charge your cell phone before leaving home. A flashlight, radio, and extra batteries are a smart thing to have. If anyone else has suggestions, leave them in the comment section.

Our family loves winter, snow, the cold as you know from my blog but as much as I love it I do not like to drive in it! I have 25 mile drive one way on the highway to work each day. Somedays I am totally stressed by the time I get there if the weather is bad.

I hate driving in snow. If you get canned food you can eat from a can without warming it up don't forget the can opener.

UPDATE at 12 midnight 11/21:

Still on track to receive 1-3" of snowfall in Rittman. Akron area now under a Lake Effect Snow WARNING - 6-8 inches of snow there, then up toward Geauga County some high locales may receive 1-2 FEET. As WIXY said, take the emergency kit with you, winds may gust to 30 mph and create near-blizzard conditions close to the lake!

Road Flares are also a good idea...along with not just a radio, but a NOAA Weather Radio.

Above all else however, please take your common sense. If it looks too dangerous, it probably is. Don't risk your life if it's not a necessity!

Smart move to take the extra time. As of 5am snow extends from Akron to Cleveland's southwest side, as well as around the Medina area. Another band is just east of that, and it extends right from Austintown, Ohio to...you guessed it, East Cleveland, with some of the heaviest focused on Strongsville, Ohio and the surrounding area there.

Boots!!! Always have boots!! I also keep a pair of those really thick wool socks to put on (in case I need the boots!!!)

Not a bad morning though. Had to go slow, but wasn't too rough from here.

Enjoy your vacation next week, I know I will enjoy mine!!!

Something that has helped me many times in my northern mich. travels - Kitty Litter - great for if you get stuck in the snow, pour it under your tires. Also keep some snacks - granola bars & chocolates.

If I have to drive in the snow I usually try to take my husband and make him drive. ;)
Be careful out there.

Boy, I'm glad I live in Atlanta! When we have snow (even an inch!) the city SHUTS DOWN!

But seriously, I think taking the week off is a GREAT idea. Thanksgiving is always my favorite time of year. Perfect for staying indoors and snuggling with your spouse (that's what I plan to do anyway!)

Even "mild Atlanta" is expected to get down to the 20's tonight. I think just about everywhere is pretty darn frigid!

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The game was
