Sunday Musing: Three years of blogging has been rewarding!

Last Wednesday I quietly observed my third anniversary as a blogger. The past few days, I've been thinking about how rewarding this has been.

This blog was a result of my passion to communicate. This started when I was in elementary school. I wanted to be a disc jockey as I thought the folks on the radio had to be some of the coolest, and best paid, people around. Cliff Note:Some of the radio folks I know tell me otherwise.

When I got into high school, I wanted to become a sportscaster. My hero in that area was Joe Tait, Cleveland Cavaliers play by play man. After I graduated from high school, I went to broadcasting school, but did nothing with it. I blame no one but the guy at the keyboard.

But in the years since, I have taken advantage of any chance I could to be around an open mike. I feel that in my current capacity as the voice of the Rittman Indians Marching Band, I'm getting my money's worth out of my training. And the appreciation shown me tells me that this is better than many radio gigs.

But back to my blogging. When I started out, I had no idea how long I would be doing this or if I would even get anyone reading. I then promoted the heck out of the blog and hope I would get more readers than people annoyed with my persistence. Then came the rewards.

First reward was having one of my posts printed in an area newspaper along with a byline. That was a From the Pressbox of the Rittman Band Show. Along with the publication, I got thanked by some of the student musicians of the Rittman Band. So that was a double reward.

Next reward is all the blogs that have given me credit, at least partially, for their desire to start their own blogs. One such blog is Cleveland Classic Media, a well written blog by Tim Lones, someone that I became acquainted with on the local media message boards. His blog has taken off well.

I received a book from one who became a friend through this blog during a down period. He told me that it helped him through depression and it was a real godsend to me. I have received other books as a result of my blogging, one of which I was asked to review for this blog.

I have also received gifts from others. Last Christmas, Jen, of Unglazed fame, sent a package to me. It contained a braclet, which she made for my wife, and several bookmarks for me. Pigeon sent me a mug handcrafted by her daughter.

Finally, those that touched the heart the most have been a couple of sympathy cards. As you know I have lost both of my brothers in the past 1-1/2 years. When my younger brother passed away March 4 of last year, along with all my blogging friends at that time supporting me, I got a sympathy card from Struke, of Media Matters fame. He was going through some personal struggles himself at that time, but was willing to reach out to me. Early this month I received a card from Susie aka Clean and Crazy, of My Recovery fame. This one looked professionally made. It had her daughter on the front and a very touching message inside.

And I cannot say thank you to all who come to this blog near enough.

The heck with Twitter. I prefer the slow pace of Blogger.

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The game was
