Sunday Musing: The Road To 1000

As I prepare this post, it will number in the 990's. Part of me had hoped that I would have already posted number 1000, but everything comes in it's own time.

Having so many posts allows me at times to put up "classic" posts where I may do some simple edits to make it a bit more relevant, or just a "Cliff Note" to explain when I first posted it. In posting, I'm always reviewing my old posts, some I view as a proud father, others are just there for posterity. Then there are those that stick out like a sore thumb, like my first few.

This is how I "signed on" on August 26, 2006"
"Okay this is the beginning of a new blog.

Who am I? I've posting on several internet forums under the name of 74WIXYgrad. I use that name since I graduated from the WIXY School of Broadcast Technique in 1974. Most people who post with me simply refer to me as WIXY, and that's cool. I consider it to be an honor to be associated with one of the legendary Top 40 stations of all time.

WIXY's gone bananas was a promotion of WIXY/1260 in Cleveland, Ohio in late 1973, and since I will be speaking my mind at times, I felt that that was an appropiate title for this blog.

This won't be just about radio. Maybe very little. If you want radio news I suggest you go to Ohio Media Watch, as he will do a much better job than I can.

This may be about my faith, as I make no bones about being a Born Again Christian. It may be about auto racing, as I am a NASCAR fan. It may be just about anything.
"

My first group of readers were those from the message boards, many of which at one time or another made a living in electronic media. At the time I was wondering how I could realize a life long dream of being on the radio. I take pride in the fact that I still dream, even past the age of fifty. King Solomon wrote that the people who don't have a vision(dream) will perish. Little did I realize that much of my dream will be realized as I sit writing this blog.

The first couple hundred posts were aimed at a mostly local audience. As I wrote last Sunday, there were even some that I emailed to The Post. Most of those, after some editing, were written in the paper with me getting the byline. Now I had friends from the message boards as well as proud band parents reading this. I was also read by friends who wondered if I could write.

July, 2007, I started going national. I also discovered the power of promotion as I became friends with Liquid. Had it not been for her friendship and friends, I may not have made it to 300. I also found out around then that I could get some readers with some controversy. Those readers were temporary. It was the permanent ones that taught me the most important thing was to be myself,

I wondered if I would keep people from coming around when I wrote about my life and you did. You faithfully came around to read my band show reports. You supported me when I took two weeks to write posts about my younger brother when he passed away last year. You came here and helped welcome new friends here. And we all mourned the loss of Liquid.

You chuckle at my stories, laugh at my jokes, and compliment my poetry. You have helped me realize my dream of communicating. You have also helped me reach out to an international audience.

So to those who come here, my personal friends, those I have met through the message boards, and other bloggers, the road to 1000 has been easy to travel with all of you coming along.

And in case you are wondering, this is post 991.

Post 800: Time to chat

Hi Guys, It's hard to believe that this is post number 800 for this blog. I started this blog out of my desire to communicate. Since radio and television is becoming more and more automated and less and less personal, I'm glad I made the decision to go in this direction as it has given me many blessings. When I first decided to write my musings, a friend from the radio and television boards who goes by the name of newsnomore, told me not to be discouraged if I didn't get any readers. The fact that I did in the early going made me surprised and grateful that anyone was enjoying what I wrote. I've had people tell me that maybe it wasn't meant for me to ever be in radio, that maybe my calling was blogging. Nowadays I think blogging makes for better two way conversation than terrestrial radio, especially the way I do it, non confrontational. The closest I come from any confrontation is the innocent digs that Pat and I shoot at each other. On an average day I get betwee...

Lawson's Chip Dip

On a couple of occasions I have written posts dedicated to Lawson's, a convenience store chain that was located in Ohio for close to 50 years. In the late 1980's the chain was bought out by Dairy Mart, of Engfield Ct. Dairy Mart was then purchased by Alimentation Couche-Tard, and most stored were rebranded Circle K. Something that has survived the years since Lawson's has left the landscape is Lawson's Chip Dip. I get many hits on this blog from people out of Ohio, I'm thinking former Buckeyes, looking for availability of this chip dip. I had gotten an email from a former resident of Cleveland looking for it. I emailed Circle K about this sometime ago asking if it was possible to send the dip out to those out of state, they said because of quality issues that it was not possible. My only suggestion would be to get in touch with Circle K in your home area and ask them to start stocking this very popular item that seems to make every get-together complete. Now we wil...

Sometimes Sports are Just Sports

This may or may not make the final cut of my book. I was writing about some events this weekend and what had started as a joyous Friday night at my home school district became a weekend of heartbreak in the area after what happened at another school. Sometimes We Need to Realize That Sports are Just Games   Friday nights in late summer and early fall are sometimes a big deal for high school students and their families. As the long-time band announcer for my local high school, it is a time of year I always look forward to. This past Friday night was originally supposed to be the homecoming game for the local high school. The schedule had to be changed a bit because of the uncertainty of the opponents being able to field a team. There was talk around the league that they may have had to forfeit this game, so homecoming for the local school was rescheduled. The opponents, which are rivals of my local school district, were able to field a team and the game was played. The...
